What Is a Sick Note?
A sick note is an official document issued by a qualified healthcare professional confirming that you are unfit for work or study for a specified period. In the UK, most sick notes are provided by:
GPs (General Practitioners) in NHS surgeries
Nurse practitioners or other clinicians
Private doctors and telehealth services
Sick notes typically include:
Your name and date of birth
Dates you’re unfit for work or study
A brief description of the medical reason (e.g. “viral infection”)
The clinician’s signature and contact details
Employers and schools often require a sick note (at their discretion), to rationalize the purpose of leave, qualify for Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) or other benefits.
When & Why You Need One
Statutory Sick Pay (SSP): Employees off work for more than 4 consecutive days (including weekends) can claim SSP.
Company Sick Pay Schemes: Some employers offer full pay for the first week of sickness but require a note from day 3 or earlier.
Insurance Claims: Income protection or private health insurers often demand a sick note for claim validation.
School & University Absences: Institutions may ask for a medical certificate after a certain number of days off to authorise your absence.
Visa & Immigration Purposes: International students or workers sometimes need medical certification for Home Office compliance.
Here’s a list of common conditions, where one may benefit from a sick note:
Respiratory infections (e.g. flu, COVID-19)
Musculoskeletal injuries
Back pain
Sprains & strains (e.g. ankle sprain, wrist strain)
Fractures (e.g. broken wrist)
Post-operative recovery (e.g. after minor surgery or procedure)

How to Get a Sick Note in the UK
Conventionally, getting a sick note meant booking an appointment, waiting for availability, and visiting your GP in person — often adding stress when you’re already unwell.
Today, there’s a simpler, convenient way: You can apply online and receive a standard sick note from a UK-registered GP — without leaving your home.
Here’s how the online process usually works:
Complete a Quick Online Questionnaire: Provide details about your symptoms, condition, and the type of certificate you need. We may ask for supporting information or evidence.
Doctor Review: A GMC-registered GP reviews your application. They ensure it’s clinically appropriate before issuing any documentation.
Receive Your Certificate: If approved, you receive a signed PDF sick note via email, typically within 24 hours — often much faster! You may also choose to benefit from our same day service.
This convenient online approach is convenient, fast, and official — and it’s delivered by UK GMC Registered GP's.
Please note: We do not issue MED3 notes. The MED3 is a specialized fit-note used for extended absences, legal, occupational, or insurance purposes and includes a detailed evaluation of your ability to work. It must be issued by a clinician who has managed your care over an extended period—typically your NHS GP or hospital consultant.
